Lachlan and taken me through the big topics for the upcoming Australian Budget (taking place on the 25th of March 2025) - the Budget that wasn’t supposed to happen!
In this podcast, you can share this journey with me. We spend 10 minutes on Budget structure and history, 15 mins discussing productivity policy, 20 minutes on NDIS, and then have an extra 30 min section where we talk about what we would do if we were kidnapped and thrown into the Treasurer hotseat with no preparation.
Needless to say, if there is a plan to kidnap anyone I think this conversation makes it clearer you should grab Lachlan instead of me.
Although by the end I think we were both getting pretty spicy!
What I think we mentioned - but perhaps couldn’t emphasise enough - is the sheer fiscal pressurs the government is facing. If you want to understand this give last week’s AFR piece by Chris Richardson a careful read.
There are long-lasting structural deficits and elevated revenue risks making this a situation where we really need to think about how we achieve consolidation at the lowest cost. This is why we were so focused on both productivity (to increase the revenue base) and the NDIS (an unexpectedly large major area of expenditure).
Keen for your thoughts on big topics for the day - comment down below and all that jazz.
