Thank you, it was refreshing to listen to this given there is almost no serious policy discussion in the media on the eve of this election. Things I would like answered if Steven comes back:
- what about land value tax?
- what about carbon tax?
- how should vehicles be taxed in a world of EVs?
- why do a small number of European countries manage to stay close to the frontier with a very high tax burden, whereas Europe in general seems overtaxed, sclerotic etc? Do they just have incredible governance?
- what grade would Steven give my personal fantasy tax systems (10-15% business and income taxes, $100 carbon tax, 1% land value tax, 10% GST targeting a tax:GDP ratio of about 25%)?
Really enjoyed the breakdown of your discussion with Steven Hamilton. Long-form conversations like this add a lot of depth to public debates on tax reform, especially the points on behavioural responses, GST over the lifecycle, and communication challenges within institutions. I’ve been exploring similar policy discussions while working on my own web projects as well.
I think Steven misrepresents the common view on negative gearing. It shouldn't be abolished, just sequestered to only offset investment income like every other country that does it
